Socratic Seminar
Objective: To engage in a strategy for students to articulate and clearly communicate thoughts and ideas about text.
Description: Please come to this workshop to learn about a student engagement strategy called Socratic Seminar. With this strategy students will participate in discussions on assigned text with a group of 10-12 students, depending on class size. By using this method, students begin to feel more comfortable discussing text with their peers.
Advice for Implementation: 1. Be patient. At first, some students are reluctant to participate. 2. Students lead. Let students discuss the text WITHOUT teacher interruption. This is not easy, however IS beneficial to the students.
